I kept doing this with all my crushes. Whenever I like someone I try to seem as distant as I can so I don't show my affection and seem too desperate. I try to up my value by showing off my intelligence and "cool" but most of the times it just comes off as too obnoxious. I don't really know what is the right way to show your crush that you like them but I know from experience that if I learned that a guy likes me I would just try to avoid him as much as I can and I don't want the same thing to happen to me. PLEASE teach me the right way to start flirting with my crush...

You are thinking from an entirely female perspective , men do not care about perceived " value " , that is attractive to females when selecting males , hence " needy " seeming men of perceived low value / status get swiftly & brutally rejected by women. These guys will think you are indifferent , if not outright hostile to them , so they will keep well away from you.

All you need to do is lose the RBF & " cool indifferent " act , simply smile / have open body language & give VERY clear signals you are open to approach ( men are CRAP at reading the subtle female signals as our brains are wired so differently ) , or even approach yourself , the vast majority of men will be flattered , as we are not the desired gender & positive female attention is rare for most men.
