How to flirt and approach women?

Well even though I am up there in age, I have never figured out a way to approach women. When I do want to approach a lady I might fancy, my mind goes absolutely blank (my heart starts racing). I will then just keep it moving, since I don't know what to say. Right now my biggest fail is wanting to approach this woman in the Gym, but going on 3 months without saying anything to her. Anyway I am looking at how others figured out their way of approaching and flirting (this is something I am totally clueless on how to do, or if a woman is flirting with me) with women. I haven't figured out a good way to approach women that actually works. Yes I am afraid of rejection, I do take it personally. For me it's hard not to separate the rejection from something I am doing wrong, or me as a person. I need some help.

You're going to be rejected. It is going to happen, and it'll happen quite a bit.

If you can't handle that, then just walk away from dating.
