I think cute is the lower of the compliments regarding the face. I've never been called beautiful, pretty or gorgeous. Just cute. But if he thinks im cute then he thinks im cute

Cute is safer than calling beautiful and hot. Hot may sound inappropriate and beautiful may sound like a word capable of triggering romantic feelings. So, cute is the best safe bet.

It's just a compliment, or at least it suppose to be, so there's no harm in using it. I'm not a fan of the word since it feels infantilizing and makes me conscious of my looks/behavior.
