I've tried acting like an asshole, but it's not working, so I figure I've probably got some details wrong, since acting like a nice guy is obviously not the answer. What are some examples of things I can do to get someone interested in me?
You forgot something. Money and power. Scarface was and is 100% correct. Most women want a guy with money and power and will do and sit through anything to get it. It's a natural occurrence in all female thinking. It's evolution. Money and power means procreation and safety. Procreation and safety are at the top of every woman's mind. It's not asshole or nice guy. That's why you will see assholes and nice guys with the hottest women, usually because they have money or power or both. "First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women." Dude have you experimented with this? Like social experiment? I have and so have others. I have literally made myself look rich and lied about being rich and having connections, all of a sudden, women were coming out of the woodwork. I was being approached. I was being talked about. But me being me, regular me. Nope. Money, power, women. Sorry man, evolution.
Acting like an asshole doesn't work and if it works it attracts the wrong kind of women.
And "nice guys" aren't really nice people, just pathetic and spineless sex creeps. It is so difficult to act like a normal, well-adjusted human being?

no one wants to be treated as an asshole. That shows that your damaged and your going to seek people as damaged as you or worse. You first need to find yourself internally and treat yourself in the best possible way. When you treat yourself in the way your happy with, you will attract a great gal. But if your going to treat them like assholes by being an asshole, then you just wanna play around. If that's what you want, then its totally your call on how you wanna take this forward.
Acting like an asshole is only going to get you women who are damaged and have a list of things wrong with them.
"Nice guys" aren't really nice and usually tell on themselves very quickly.
Normal men attract normal, decent women.
Laugh at her when she does something stupid.
