Do You Know How To Use Chopsticks?

Yes, I use them usually in the three finger standard grip, but on occasion I will use a variant grip, which interestingly enough isn't featured in this article on multiple grip options.I had always thought it a natural way to hold chopsticks, and in my mind, I consider it a more "formal and fancy" option.
The "standard" way leaves ring and pinky free:

My "formal" style incorporates the ring and pinky:

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
I learned when I was around 16 or so years old. Friends and I started to going to a wonderful local Chinese restaurant. My friends taught me. It's easy.
Eating certain things with chop sticks is actually more convenient than stabbing with a fork. I usually don't use chopsticks for rice, though, unless it's sticky rice.
I love Asian food - Chinese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Japanese - and much prefer to eat it with chopsticks. But forks and spoons sometimes come in handy for certain dishes.
I've always wanted to learn to eat with chopsticks and so does my family. We order sushi sometimes with chopsticks but I'm so bad at it I give up and eat with a fork. I'd never let anyone else other than my family see me do that though because that would be so embarrassing lol.
Knowledge is a wonderful thing & leaning something new is a wonderful things as well. On the other side of things practice makes perfect when using chopsticks.
It really is. I will have to learn it when I get the chance.
Indeed I do! Sushi is my favorite cuisine and I wouldn't be caught dead eating it with a fork.
Indeed I do, well said indeed. Until I master chopsticks, fork for me.
😁😁😁
@TrueConfection Sushi is just bait renamed.
@exitseven Put it out there and I'll bite!

I can pick up and eat food with chopsticks. Let's... just leave it at that.
I’m not even going to ask & I’ll just leave it at that. Hahaha.
Yah... it's pretty sad.
Like everything in life practice makes perfect.
Yeah I do, travelled to China a lot with business and it’s a normal thing,
also had learned before then, as I do go to plenty Chinese restaurants and it’s nice to be able to use them.
Chris you are the Master & that must be fun & interesting & a lot of work to travel to China & in addition to mastering chopsticks I’m sure in time you will master the language as well if you already haven’t.
@Static_In_The_Attic zero chance of learning the language lol
Chopsticks yes, language no
It’s good to learn with things like peanuts
I only learned how to use them when I once went to a Chinese restaurant. I basically said if I can't use chopsticks to pick up this food I will not eat.
That is a good way to do it & if you can’t use chopsticks to pick up food you will not eat.
When I ate sushi when I was little, I couldn't use Chopsticks and instead of using it, I was dipping Chopsticks right in the middle, but now I can use it.
Like a lot of things you make them work & good to hear you can use chopsticks now.
I don't, but it's never been a problem for me because I don't eat Chinese food.
Dunno if counts, but I DO know how to use drumsticks..<< Not a bad drummer.
I love using drumsticks! Chicken as well as ice cream.
Gets the snare drum all greasy though :P
I learned- but of course- I'd rather use a spoon and/or fork.
Learned on a vacation at a Chinese luau in Hawaii (way back around 1969 or so). The tour guide was "showing" everyone how to do use them, and he was probably the worst at actually using them!
If I had to use them to eat I would starve. I suck at using chopsticks.
Same here, breakout the silverware!
Never tried. I mostly prefer American food. But if I eat any Asian style chicken, its often served on a toothpick
I’d likely stab the food with the chopstick and use it like its a toothpick
If you can’t figure chopsticks out stab your food & as for me I’ll make it a goal of mine to master using chopsticks.
I can use them! It's one of those things that you practice until you suddenly figure it out and then it becomes very easy. I can eat anything with chopsticks.
It was like that for me too. Once to master that "pivot point", it's easy!
Nope, I’ve tried several times, but I’ve never been able to get the hang of it.
I’m going to challenge you to master using
chopsticks & I’ll do the same.
DEAL Or NO DEAL?
You know I’m going to laugh & if it were within my power to take you out to dinner right now we can laugh together & attempt chopsticks.
No I don't but I really never had a interest in using them either though
Fair enough.
Maybe one day I will but as of now not really
Make mastering chopsticks a goal, you can do it. I have to learn as well.
I might one day. Like I said... I have never really been interested and learning something I am not interested in is not the easiest thing for me. Though I am impressed sometimes by people who can use them
Yep. When I lived in China I only used chopsticks for a year.
Wonderful & by the end of the year you were probably a professional at using them.
Yes, yes. 😋 Also, bought some very beautiful chopsticks when I got back in Georgia and still use them sometimes. Reminds me of my time in Asia.
what holding method do you use?
https://marcosticks.org/ten-thousand-ways/
@zeitgeist057 I guess mine is close to standard grip.
I’ve been taught I should hold the part of sticks so that 2/3 is below your hand and 1/3 is left on the upper side.
Yes I leant it from Youtube. It's really easy. I learnt it in like under 2 mins. I became pro at once lol. I can eat everything with chopsticks and I love using them too as you can handle food properly with it compared to forks. at least for me.
I suck at using chopsticks!
I'd love to learn how to use them tho!
Honesty is a wonderful thing & I such at using chopsticks as well.
On the other hand practice makes perfect.
No I'm ashamed, I eat Asian food a lot and I've been to Thailand and cambodia several times... ill learn before the end of the year
Same here when it comes to learning by the end of the year.
However if I’m eating soup I won’t be using chopsticks.
I forgot about Wonton soup & I love wonton soup as well.
@KitsuneFoxSpirit are you ok? Yes I have. No one asked for your opinion. Thank you
I've been in Korea for about a year, and I still don't know how to use chopsticks 😬
As for Korea I’m sure you had a wonderful time & as for you practice away & the next time you go you will be a chopstick pro.
Practice makes perfect as they say, you can do it.
Yeah I do. Not very well but I can get away with it if I have to use them.
Practice makes perfect & I suck at using them.
Nah I could learn never found importance to learn so I jus use a fork
As for me I grew up using silverware so using chopsticks is hard.
In Chinese culture, you learn chopsticks starting at age 2, and become fluent by age 5.
Good deal @jennifer_bloom & when you eat dinner do you still use chopsticks? As for me I recently when to a restaurant & on the table there was a silverware & I requested chopsticks & I just couldn’t get it. I watched a video & next time I go back I’m going to use chopsticks.
It takes practice but you will adapt! Congrats for trying, super thoughtful : )
Practice makes perfect as they say & I’m going to practice with meal at home. When you use chopsticks does it actually pace you when you eat food because you eat slower?
I use chopsticks when it’s easier than using a spoon or a fork for example, vegetable dishes are often too peculiar to be properly held with spoons and when mixed with non vegetables, are not easily marinated when you use a fork.
I know the theory; just can't get it to work in the practical sense. I am a bit of a klutz; so I just stick with western utensils.
Same here & one day I will figure out chopsticks.
No I don’t know how to do it plus I have Cupital carpal tunnel syndrome that makes you have weak fingers unfortunately and I would have to get surgery
Totally understandable.
With carpal tunnel did you ever try or hear about magnetic bracelets & their benefits?
It might work or it might be a scam however look in to it.
https://youtu.be/hZlpyw0dPuI It could be something or it could be nothing however here is a video I found on YouTube. Maybe talk to your doctor about magnetic bracelets.
Bit rusty coz I haven't had sushi in ages but I manage.
Instead of B. Y. O. B, B. Y. O. F in this case.
Makes sense but I'd rather try remembering how to use chopsticks.
Yes, like this

Yep. Perfectly. Though causaian I grew up in eastern countries as family's been in China & Japan for around 50 years or so.
I tried to use them buti just couldn't get the hang of it.
Same here however I’ll try again in the near future.
i got my first pair of chopsticks really young. they were transformers and i'm a pro unless the rice isn't sticky
No and I am not interested in spending years developing the skill.
European spoons, forks and knives are a more efficient and effective way to eat.
Yes. But prefer to inhale.
Yes! Shovel the food in with a fork, spoon or spork.
or hands… lmfao
jkjk
Love sporks! Such a handy invention.
@blackcupcake Or feet if really busy!
@Blackcupcake Back in the day before silverware everyone probably used their fingers & hands & I could imagine how many got sick as well.
@dustybiker that would be a huge talent!🤣
@Static_In_The_Attic yep… people still do tho, I’m sure it’s fine as long as they wash their hands
@Blackcupcake I’ve been in taekwondo for years. I have the flexibility… it just goes against what remains of my childhood OCD. lol
@dustybiker ooooh that’s super cool!! I’ve wanted to do boxing or wrestling when I was younger lmfao
@Blackcupcake Do it!!!
@dustybiker I know for a fact I’ll get injured… lmfao
I’m too clumsy, so sports like that are a big no
@Blackcupcake lmao Maybe it’ll help with that?
@dustybiker it could… but I think martial arts seems lots more fun hahaha
@Blackcupcake definitely. And the looks are fun when you run in to grab milk after class. 🥋
@dustybiker lmfao… I’d trip and fall on my face while running in🤣
@Blackcupcake Positive. Most stores have security cameras, so you could share the footage with the class!! 😁
@dustybiker lmfao… I don’t think anyone would want to spar with me after that
@Blackcupcake 😂 Truth.
@dustybiker sadly…🤣🤣
Yes I do. I use chopsticks every time I eat Chinese or Japanese food.
I know how to use them and I do use them for pho and ramen. Otherwise forks are better.
I'm not a top-notch professional at using those, but at the same time... I'm okay at using those no problem.
yes, with both hands as well...
My brother from another mother talk about skills. I have a hard time using them in general. I’m going to practice.
They were frequently used at my in-laws.
The in-laws or out-laws?
My family would disown me if I didn’t.
As for me I grew up using silverware & recently I went to a Chinese restaurant & I requested chopsticks instead of silverware & talk about a hard time. With meals at home I’m going to start practicing with chopsticks.
Try with the practice plastics they have for kids! Helped mine out when they were learning (:
Wonderful & have a few extra chopsticks so I’ll practice on them & the next time I go out to eat I’ll hopefully be a pro. One of my old coworkers used to use chopsticks when she ate at the lunch table & when you use chopsticks it actually looks like it paces you when eating.
Yes, this Asian is.
Ironically, it's my parents who struggle and stick to the spoon & fork (or "knife & fork" as is more common here in the U. S.) when possible.
Chopsticks work great for German food
Using your hands works good for German food as well.
Not great at it but I manage
It isn’t easy however give me time & I’ll manage as well.
Yes, I do.
Good deal on that & I’ll figure out chopsticks one of these days.
Nope , I prefer using toothpicks or billiards cue instead while eating something it is much much more easier to hold it in hands and to use them lol
Maybe, never really tried
As for you I say try & give it a go.
I will next time 😊
yes.
Really? The lacking capitol letter indicates possible on-the-fenciveness….
Good deal & give me a little time & I will be able to use them as well.
@dustybiker lmfao… yes!!!😤🤣
@Static_In_The_Attic you got it!
Chinese people would know.
It probably comes naturally for them as well.
I did not attend that lesson, i will just pass.
Same here however I’m going to figure out how to use them.
@Static_In_The_Attic lol all the best, i cannot stress myself if i have a fork plus fingers.

Yep!
i dont but i could learn instantly.
sure
Good deal on that one, I have to practice more.
I do
I don’t, hahaha.
Yes EZPZ
Good deal my friend & I’m going to have to practice a little more so using chopsticks will be EZPZ.
yea i can
I used to practice on marbles.
Yes I can use chopsticks very well.
I do pretty good with them
Nope.
