It's not technically a fruit but is usually referred to as such in the kitchen. It's a polarising fruit that people either love or hate. But where do you stand?

Rhubarb sounds like some orcish war cry. We call it Rabarber or Rhabarber. My father likes it. Especially a sweet stew cooked on rhubarb and cherry juice, filtered and served cold as drink. 'Rhabarber Kuchen' is a German dish, it's practically like apple, peach or plum pie. Butter biscuit bottom, with a thin sweet cottage cheese layer and soft cooked rhubarb stalks covered with thin layer of cherry or strawberry jelly to prevent oxidation.
This is complicated for me.
As a child I had rhubarb in a crumble one time and vomited afterwards. I don't know why but for the rest of my youth and some of my adulthood I stayed away from it as I blamed it for that traumatic experience (I still have no idea why I puked).
Only in my 5th decade did I try it again and found it not so bad and didn't spew. This disappointed me in a way but made me realise what a wasted opportunity that all those years without something that was locally grown that I didn't take advantage of.
Rhubarb ! Hmmm ! Just delicious when prepared correctly in whatever way one may fancy, not only in jam and tarts, because wine can also be made with rhubarb, mixed or not with other fruit. Well, as you point out, strictly spoken it isn't fruit, but still, it's used as.
By the way, the leaves are normally not eaten, but actually, prepared as spinach, they are a perfect natural remedy against constipation... That's what I discovered after having tried a recipe found in an old "Larousse Ménager".
@purplepoppy
We have an absolute abundance of it... We give it away to both our parents, my two sisters, friends and work colleagues... What's left over we put in a basket and leave it outside our gates... A freebie to the villagers.
I'm sure 90% of rhubarb eaten in the world comes from a neighbour with too much
You are quite probably absolutely right @purplepoppy lol
Rhubarb is a fascinating ingredient! Its unique tartness makes it a delight to experiment with. I fondly recall a charming English dessert café where I savored a divine rhubarb and apple crumble on a chilly spring afternoon. The burst of tangy flavor, perfectly balanced with sweetness, was unforgettable. Rhubarb truly shines when combined with other fruits, transforming desserts into unforgettable culinary experiences. Its versatility in both sweet and savory dishes adds excitement to any meal. 🍏🥧

Strawberry-rhubarb pie is a thing here. Not my first choice, but I’ll eat it. 🙂
I'm unsure about it. I had it once and I couldn't figure out whether I liked it or hated it. But considering it's sour, it might be a "I don't like it."
Not my favorite. When growing up, we had some rhubarb growing in our back yard. My mother often picked it and boiled it up for the dinner vegetable. The main thing I remember is my parents telling me not to eat the leaves because they are poisonous.
Every parent tells their kid not to eat the leaves. Strange when you consider most kids hate leafy veg and have to be forced to eat their cabbage, kale, etc.
Meh, I'm middle of the road on rhubarb. The giant leaves on the plant are cool. My father used to grow it. A current neighbor grows it. But I can't say I'm a huge fan. Maybe once every few years rhubarb in some dessert sounds appealing. On the other hand I don't hate it either.
Grandma had plenty of it in the garden - not planned, though.
I love it in all its variations:
- fresh, dipped in some sugar
- as marmalade
- on cakes or sweet pies
...
sadly, it does not grow well here in the tropics. So I'm a little short in supply as per now.
Life can be hard - in the colonies :)
The leftist woke mob might try to get you to swoon over rhubarb, insisting that we all have a politically correct palette. But just like their Policies, rhubarb is a divisive flavor, loved only by those who thrive on the bitterness of resentment.
I feel pleased, not by taste, sight instead.
Low-angle shot please, to restore rhubarb's glory !
I love rhubarb.
Used to eat it like candy with a bit sugar and I make rhubarb jam every year.
I like rhubarb in pies etc.
Fun fact, back in the day in Hollywood if they had a large scene with many extras milling around together like in on an ancient Roman street scene, they would instruct the “extras” to continuously say “rhubarb”. By doing so it created crowd noise that sounded like 100 conversations on a busy street.
I have eaten it. I don't hate it, but I really prefer to not eat it.
I enjoy it from time to time! We have it in PA. It's a pleasant summer thing from time to time.
I love it. I know this lady she makes the best rhubarb cake. I have never tasted anything that is as good. I haven’t had in so long and I’m craving it so much but that lady Is a friend of my family we don’t see her often and sadly:(
My grandma used to grow it and make desserts like pie and stuff with it plus we would just pick them, wash and eat them in the summer with sugar.. They are a tasty treat tho sometimes too sour lol.
I grow rhubarb and bake it in squares, pies, and just to eat from a dish of it cooked down and sweetened.
I like rhubarb. I was told it stops nightshade from growing so I should plant some by my compost bin but upon research that seems to be false, so I guess I'll just keep weed spraying and ripping up the nightshade
My dad was the only one in our house that liked it. My mom made stuff with it just for him. I couldn't even stand the smell of it
Rhubarb is beautiful, I know someone who grows it and get mine free because he can't eat it all
My grandparents grew it in their gardens. I'm moving later this year and I plan to have a rhubarb bed as I'll have enough land to put in a bed for it near the brassicas
I love rhubarb pie. It has such a distinct flavour that isn't really imitated easily by other ingredients to my knowledge. As for the ingredient itself, I've never had it, so I can't say.
Best. Fruit. Ever. (does it count as a fruit?) Apple and rhubarb crumble.
I grew up with my family growing rhubarb in the back yard, and we also grow rhubarb at our vacation home. After harvesting, we usually bake it into a pie.
I LOVE Rhubarb, usually by itself in crumbles or mixed with eating apples, this reduces the amount of sugar needed, any surplus I have I'll stew it then freeze it.
rhubarb-strawberry pie is one of the very best pies anywhere
Rhubarb, Rhubarb, Rhubarb. There is a reason those words are uttered about a nonsense.
I like it, it grows out in the garden. Tastes good in pie.
I just made rhubarb-almond crumble!! Strawberry preserves in the side.
I fucking love rhubarb but thought it went extinct in 1996. Where you got Rhubarb and whose your connect?
