Why do mixed drinks taste horrible at chain restaurants?

They aren't real bars with real bartenders. Many of their drinks are pre-mixed. The ones that are made on the spot are made without a fully stocked bar and mixers. They either can't make the drink at all, or they improvise with whatever ingredients they have.
The big chain restaurants in general are a heck of a lot more common than they used to be. They have a business formula that works. Running a restaurant and making enough profit to stay in business is not easy. They have a very low profit margin, and any mistake or excess costs will drive them under. Even the big chains that have a successful formula go out of business quite often. The drinks are part of the atmosphere more than being a serious drinking establishment.
Cheapest liquor possible in a mixed drink, mixers are probably on line coming from cannisters. You're much better off drinking bottled beer, or getting a bottle of wine that hasn't been sitting around open for a day. If you get a call brand on the rocks or straight up, that should be ok too, but it's likely to be really expensive.
You make your money mostly off of the bar. It's short-sighted, I agree.
They shave every penny off the cost they possibly can while charging higher and higher prices as long as people will pay them. It didn't used to be this way, they cared about making sure customers had the highest quality food and drinks but now it doesn't matter to them at all, the only thing that matters is giving the perception of high quality and taking people's money. They've driven all the mom & pop restaurants out of business so they have the whole market to themselves. The only thing left for getting really good food and drinks and service are, in cities, the ultra-high priced restaurants, where you'll pay $100 a person or more for a meal.
Prolly 'cuz they're so friggen expensive it makes me lose my appetite and I'm like, no way, I'm paying that much for 1 drink when I could go buy a whole bottle for the same damn price so, I'm just gonna' go do that and nevermind the restaurant.
Chain restaurants focus on speed, consistency, and cost control more than craft. Bartenders are often not highly trained, use pre-mixed syrups, cheap spirits, lots of ice, and sweeteners to standardize flavor. The goal is predictable drinks, not great ones.
I remember a margarita at a big chain that tasted like lime candy. Compare that to a small bar where they juice citrus to order and measure carefully: same drink, completely different world. 🍹

I mean typically chain restaurant drinks are pretty cheap in my experience.
in the picture there is Apple Bees which is known for having $1 margaritas and $6 specialty drinks.
and I am a manager at Olive Garden which is owned by the same company that owns Longhorn too. Our drinks are also affordable. $6 for a spiked strawberry lemonade. $7 for a margarita.
these drinks do typically only have a single shot of liquor in it. And $6 for a shot is super cheap if you compare it to a bar or a fancier restaurant.
I would say you are getting exactly what you’re paying for
Experienced bartenders do not work at chain restaurants, they work at high end restaurants and bars. At a chain restaurant, your drink is made by someone following the company's recipe book (which emphasizes reducing cost), sometimes made by your server.
A chain restaurant's business model is to make money by selling food, not drinks. Drinks are only there because some people want them.
That’s probably true, I think if these places actually served let’s say decent mixed drinks with fresh ingredients they’d get better revenue. There was a time people would go to a restaurant lounge or bar in the evening just for drinks. I think the hospitality industry has forgotten about this.
Crappy food, crappy drinks, and you pay exorbitant prices to top it all off. Fools will still waste their hard-earned cash in the holes just the same.
Because it's as little alcohol combined with as much bullshit possible. All at an exorbitant price!
They don’t have good quality drinks go to the rusty pelican At Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida. You’ll find the best piña colada’s on the market
Using cheap spirits, no restaurant or bar quality mixer can save it.
I wouldn't know- haven't had a cocktail for about 20-30 years.
Because they use cheap ingredients and sugary mixers to cover up poor quality spirits,
I'm not sure because I don't drink, but it's probably because everything tastes kind of horrible at chain restaurants.
Chain restaurants are trash 🚮. Just stay away
Cheap ingredients. Why do you even go there?
That’s not what they are known for.
