The Truth about Tomboys

I ran across a psychology article about why some women become tomboys. It stated they where denying their feminine nature. I thought it would be good to add my two cents.

Growing up my parents called me a tomboy. I hated it! I had a few guy friends along with my sisters. I played with their toys and never saw a gender in it. It was my goal to master riding a skateboard. Growing up I always felt like my family thought I was gay simply for liking boy activities. It made me uncomfortable around other girls to not give them the wrong impression.

1. I don't dress like a boy.

I don't choose to wear skirts because they are tight on my body and usually impractical for the activity that I'm doing. I still dress feminine. I wear leggings, jeans, sandals, shoes , anything I want, and surprise I have a collection of heels.

2. Just because boys are targeted for certain activities doesn't mean they should only be for boys.

Sports, physical activities, computers, cars are all things women take a part in daily yet when it comes to being an enthusiast now she's a tomboy?

3. I'm not attracted to women

I like manly man.

4. It's their personality type

We have computers, we can make phone calls to people across the world, but we don't have a firm foundation on personalities. When taking a career test I ran across Myers Briggs personality test and realized I'm an ISTP. Give ISTP a read and learn more about how personalities are made.

I'm actually going to become a mechanic, and my choice had nothing to do with it being a man's job. I'm a woman that's mechanically inclined, I like physical activities, I think rationally. Thank you. ☺

I've always been called a Tomboy from the time I was little! I'm the only girl in between two brothers, so I guess I naturally gravitated to doing guy stuff! I have had some girly toys but very few, I don't find most girl specific toys too much fun, boy specific toys are a blast!! My best friend down the street is also a guy, I never had a chance! Neither did he, we got married two and a half years ago!! I didn't discover my girlyness until we started going out when I turned sixteen, which really confused lots of people! One day I was a Tomboy, the next (almost) I was embracing my inner pink! It's been a whole lot of fun discovering that I really am a tall, blonde, pretty girl after all!!

I've always excelled at sports, played on boys little league teams versus softball with the girls (where I was usually too good ) I didn't start playing softball on school girls teams until I was in middle school through Jr. college (Jr. And Sr. Years of high school I played on both H. S. and College teams, nobody said I couldn't so I did!). I also ran Track and Cross Country. When I transferred to University, I was offered a 50% Softball scholarship / 50% Academic (STEM) scholarship. I chose to focus on my academic work, graduating near top of my class. Last year I applied for a women in STEM Scholarship which paid for 100% of my Masters degree.

I've always been good at math and sciences, computers and mostly anything requiring logic and common sense. I'm mechanical inclined, unlike many of my (female) sisters I'm pretty visual when it comes to problem solving. (Supposedly being visual is predominantly a guy thing, I think it's brain training.). Which is probably why I'm finishing up on my Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, my B. A. Is in Civil Engineering. I already have a job with my States DOT starting in June. So I guess in some ways it does pay to be a bit of a Tomboy after all!!!

Im pretty sure everyone knows this stuff already. Having interests that predominantly attract guys is fine. It's just your personality, you know it has nothing to do with your gender and don't make it one. It's why I love tomboys.

With tomboys you can be one of the guys and do things with the guys. And at the end of the day, you still want to do *things* with a guy. It's hot, it's cute and it's cool. I love tomboys.

I am a Tomboy too and I think it made people think I was gay growing up, even though I am bisexual I prefer masculine men and I had many boy friends until I realized I was too pretty to hang with the boys.

I dressed tom-boyish, but it didn't stop them from being attracted to me causing tension and then my rejection from the group. I was a girly tomboy also because I wore dresses, nail polish, perfume, makeup and my hair was always done, as my mom would send me to get it done at the salon. But I never understood girls nor was I comfortable around them. One girl told me to just be a boy so I can get women. It made me feel ugly until I found out I was actually better looking, they just saw me as too comfortable.

I used to get compared to Alicia Keys and my dad once called me his son. I think this is also why I have had many women throw themselves at me when I was growing up, I nailed more women than my brothers, they just didn't know those girls weren't friends. I guess that was the silver lining.

P. S Being a Tomboy is usually a strong indication of bisexuality, not saying you are, but I'm just saying.

Being a tomboy isn't a strong indicator of being bisexual. Your parents and friends and society said you where gay for liking male dominated activities. You believed them. Have you gotten a chance to read up on the personality ISTP from Myers Briggs?

When you know you are interested in a an activity, then society says you must be gay for going against that norm, which one are you going to believe? That you must be gay or that you will give up that activity to play along?

I'm a female maintenance tech so I get you, girls flirt with me constantly and guys are scared of me even though I'm girly once the work clothes come off. I think it's just too much pressure for them, they don't just have to be "manly" they have to be more manly than me, most don't want to try and if they don't it wouldn't work anyways. My boyfriend's tend to be really alpha and just have a "if you want to play with the boys, then let's play" they push me harder, and it makes our differences more pronounced. Which is a good thing, they can make you feel like a girl while not getting defensive.

I'm a tomboy, too. I don't see it as a bad thing. It actually makes it a lot easier to interact with guys. I have a lot of interests that are stereotypically geared towards boys, like skateboarding, Sci Fi and coding. I don't scream at the sight of a bug, I'm not scared of the outdoors, and I have a very accepting sense of humor.
I can be more feminine if I want to, though. It's just that my instinctive behavior and general personality is not that girly.

I'm really beauty conscious and a big makeup lover and fashion freak. People call me tomboy because I workout, learn martial arts, lift weights at gym and have interest in sports so the way I carry myself has to do with what people think of me lol. My most other interests are non-gender-specific, like science and novels.

But people who know me well know that I'm a very very typical girl lmao.

I happen to really like tom boys. They are usually really sexy in their own way. As well, you can joke with them and actually do fun manly shit with them without worrying they need to redo their makeup or you're going to be too rough with them or that you'll offend them too much. One of the guys, so to speak, that you can have really good sex with as well. An awesome combo if you ask me.

"Tomboys" are some of my favs because they have the best shot at keeping up with me. Yes, I love girly girls, too, but the dynamic is usually totally different. I'm gonna go out 3 miles into the ocean on a sea kayak, and the woman I kayak next to most likely isn't a girly girl, although I would love that, too (never gonna happen?)

Exactly, I'm a tomboy too, but most tomboys I know don't wear heels, because they are also impractical, unstable and very uncomfortable.

tomboys are just fine with me, I've made many friends with girls that are tomboys and to tell you the truth I think I've fallen for them more then some of my girly friends.

we like the same things therefor we would click a lot faster. and not being afraid to do certain things and a lot more open on adventurous activities (which I like) made me enjoy thier presence.

so I'd say tomboys are cool in my book.

I’m a tomboy. I became a fire medic. I can do outdoors stuff as well as be a homemaker. I worked on my classic car for car shows as well as wore stilettos and pin-up makeup. I love geek culture and play board games and video games. I’m my own person.

I think its kinda funny (and by funny I mean stupid) that when a girl says she's a tomboy, people are like "haha are you gay?"
but also alternatively, when a girl says she's gay people are like "Sureee, are you sure you're not just a tomboy?"

1. Being a tomboy has nothing to do with your personality type.
2. Being a tomboy doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to act like a guy.
3. The more women try to be like men the less men like them.
4. Being a tomboy has nothing to do with your sexual preference.

Yes, most tomboys do like manly men because they want someone who's even more rugged than they are. I like tomboys as long as they aren't afraid of their femininity. It's good to submit to a man, the right man.

Screw all that. I'm a tomboy. I would like to wear all the dresses and skirts but I still want to play in the Mudd and wrestle.. that's just me. I'll do my nails and hair too, still want to fight, work on bikes and get dirty too. Just do you.
