When your girl vents about her problems, she doesn't want us to "solve" them?

So I've heard this a thousand times that when your girl comes home and she's venting about some problem she had in her day, she doesn't want me to provide solutions or "fix" them, she just wants me to listen.

Still I have to respond in some way so how should I reframe the situation in my head so that I know how I should respond?

"Aw sweetheart, that's horrible."

That is like a sympathetic response but seems uncaring or nonchalant?

So ladies, I understand you don't want us to solve your problems for you (in most cases) but how would you like your significant other to respond when you had a bad day?

TIA!

Thank you for all the insightful answers!

One variable that I wanted to add to this question (admittedly, I should've mentioned this in the original question) is that I'm in a long distance relationship so when she is venting, we are on the phone.
