Girl doesn't want to accept my gift because she "doesn't want to owe me."?

It's obvious but I want to beat the fact into my brain so be harsh.

Had a falling out 3 months ago with this girl I like and was friends with for a few years who was always my crush.

She at one point seemed interested in me finally, but then all of a sudden became flaky. Everytime I tried to talk to her about if something was wrong with our friendship, she started treating me coldly... It declined from there etc etc ... Me trying to be nice while she acts immature and standoffish.

Anyway, Got her a small gift for Christmas cuz it was a holiday, she messages me that she has no reason to accept it blah blah as insulting and cold as could be. For the first time we argued and I called her out on how she's been to me.

She confesses why she started acted weird and opens up about everything. She said that she was scared (even though she showed returning interest in me and was at odds with her current bf at the time), gives the ole didn't want to give me hope, and then shifts blame onto me to try and justify the immaturity. I tell her we could've just talked it out, I was happy being just her friend (which I honestly was) and we could've worked through all this. She ends up saying sorry for hurting me the whole time (and that shell keep the gift) and that we should distance ourselves.

2 months go by, no speaking or texting, n it's her bday on Valentine's day. I get her a nice card n a small gift for delivery to her house. She texts the next day saying thank you n in the same message says Im stubborn because she told me "no gifts" and that she doesn't want to owe me. Same message then goes on to tell me she hopes I have a great Valentine's day.

Is it just me that thinks otherwise, or does everyone in the world think that if you give a gift, then you are indebted.
She's Asian, so maybe that's why the idea of a random act of kindness goes over her head.

Be harsh, I know the situation is overall negative and a waste of time. I like others opinions though.
