Why do women feel they need to get their nails done?

My nan is a very girly person, and very much a socialite (she tried getting permission ot have my eyebrows waxed when I was twelve) and whenever we spent time together it'd be at a nail salon or similar, which I only went along with because my parents had inadvertently taught me that I don't have a brain of my own and can't make decisions for myself, and I've always liked the smell of those places.
Whenever it came time to pick what colour nail polish I wanted? Brown. Or bronze. Or some shade of skin colour.
Never pink, or blue, or purple or anything you'd expect a twelve year old girl to pick.
Just nice, neutral colours that looked good on my fingers, but didn't stand out (helped me get away with wearing nail polish to school too, though that wasn't the point).
Now though? I only ever paint my nails if there's some kind of occassion, and, I mean, I wore jeans to my graduation.
Do you really think there are many occassions that I will dress up for, let alone apply nail polish? XD
Did you have a typical graduation gown? I mean... if so, you could literally wear anything in the world under it and it wouldn't matter. Except mb the neck line.
@redeyemindtricks Nah, it was pretty much, wear formal, try not to spill your dinner on it. Every other girl there was wearing a dress that likely cost over a hundred bucks, and the friend I went with had bought her dress for three hundred.
The closest we got to a movies graduation was being given the sache. And the certificate. And a pen.
I just wore my nicest jeans with one of the only nice tops I own. I do have a few dresses, but the best one doesn't fit, and the other two I could have worn had been attacked by my cat when I had it. So they weren't suitable. And there is no way in hell I'm paying three hundred bucks for an outfit I would wear the one single time. Makes absolutely no sense to me.
Lol yah, that makes sense. I knew some girls (and guys) at private schools -- and some colleges -- who were expected to PAY for the cap and gown, and so who just said, basically, "fuck it" and just wore the nicest clothes they had.
At the same time, you SHOULD have a couple of all-purpose "nice clothes" type outfits.
Like, for instance, I have a couple of "oh-shit-no-time-to-pack" bundles readymade in the front of my closet -- something every mom, in particular, should have but also every girl in general -- and one of them is "nice business clothes". That sorta thing. Generic, but classy. Dark blazer, white shirt, pencil skirt. If you're totally not a skirt girl, substitute the appropriate pants or SOLID color (no stonewash! no distressing! no rips!) jeans.
Generally, you can get a nice cheap classy blazer at a forever 21 or H&M type place (or whatever the Aussie equivalent is). White shirts can be found there, too, or even at thrift stores. Classy can be surprisingly inexpensive.
by the way is a "nan" a grandmother? Sry need translation into American mahah
@redeyemindtricks haha yeah Nan is grandmother. I usually keep nan for great grandparents but the nan in question I call by name and I dont like using 'grandma' for her because thats what I call my other grandmother. And nan is married to my grandmas ex husband so...
All my jeans are solid colour except for the oldest ones that have faded (and are torn at the bottom so wouldn't be used as 'good' clothes anyway). Most of my good clothes are the type youd wear to an interview over anything else.
And my 'best' wear is stuff my stepmother bought and our tastes in clothing clash... So much.
Yah alright. I mean, I gather that this graduation meant less than nothing to you anyway, so, in effect you wouldn't even have been true to yrself if you'd worn actual "nice" clothes. I get that.
Js tho, a lot of young women unnecessarily sweat bullets over the cost of a professional wardrobe when they're just starting out. No reason to stress.
There are a FEW jobs where a fresh young woman hire should be wearing a legitimately expensive suit -- but, ALL of those jobs absolutely pay enough for her to afford one, or two, or ten (and she may as well go shopping, since those jobs all demand enough hours that she won't have any life outside the office anyway mahah).
Well there are many theories.. for example if you study the breakdown of the cuticle of a nail, you'll find that it's often the same colour as mashed potatoes which correlates to warmth and comfort.. Something the female species is often fond of due to the underlying cause of the unions that were once portrayed to be positively gravy friendly. The real question however isn't mash potatoes or gravy.. It's do we really understand our nails DNA? Are we the only species that have nails who are decorated? Or are there other places to get our nails done in space where it's much cheaper, faster, and aesthetically pleasing? We may never know.
Ik, I know what you like.
Nah man, it's got nothing to do with "the other gender". It's just... ahhh so much awesomeness.
#idoitforthefuckyeahs and there are... Just so many fuck yeahs.
You seen these ILNP Ultra Chromes mah frenn?

I mean... Why does ANYONE wear adornments? Why do boys wear "bling"? Why do ghetto boys wear gold teeth? Why does ANYONE adorn ANYTHING?
... For the fuck yeahs.
#mmhmm
Oh yeah.
Tbh, the only times I've ever seen guys wear bling is in hip hop videos
@JuicyBrain I'm from the hood. 😂
... But, something like an Audemars Piguet watch would count as "bling" here, too.
@RJGraveyTrain <3
I don't understand how you can do anything with nails that long!
And as much as I love cute stuff, the thought of having these nails makes me terrified i'm gonna poke an eye out! :P

I do love painting my nails though but I can't do it often anymore due to where i work (food hygiene) :(
Because they like it. It is pleasing, it makes them feel good, better and prettier according to their own preferences and favorites. It is entertaining, when it comes painting, it's a fashion to match the colors with, an appearance set up and an art.
"Getting nails done" doesn't just mean doing creepy stuff like the image above. It's simply a proper protection and care toward the nails.
I get my nails done as well, i don't paint or polish, but i attend to my nails so carefully, the size, the shape, the cleanse level and the sharpness.
This is something I will never understand why women like to do it

Here are some reasons:
- to make a look look complete and "perfectly put together". The colors on the nails are often the finishing touches. No one goes to an even with bare nails. That would be like not wearing earrings or not combing your hair.
- It adds a pop of color. So even in out everyday jeans and t shirt look for class, there is stil a pop of color that we like to see on ourselves
- for me, it's also a form of self-expression. For many girls too. If I feel naughty and dark, I wear dark colors. If I feel adult and sophisticated, nude or french nails. In fact, I just googled "christmas nails" like 5 minutes ago. It's so fun to match your nails with the current spirit or mood you're in
It is a status symbol. The woman who has nails like that cannot possible do anything as menial as housework, employment, childcare or even wiping ones ass. Not being able to perform these tasks means someone else must be employed to do them for you.
Purposeful inability to perform daily task = rich enough to get someone else to do it for you.
Are we talking about those gross long nails or about painting them? I paint them for the same reason a guy shapes his facial hair, dunno. It's part of who I am. I'm not into having long, manicured nails, though. I find it ugly and gross no matter what. I like to keep mine short.
Because it's fun and relaxing and shiny things make me happy. 68.media.tumblr.com/.../...q8gupi1uqk4hxo1_400.gif
That photo is such an exaggeration, lol. No one gets their nails done like that on average. I personally do it because I feel it just adds to me. Not in a contrived way, but I feel more put together having them polished. But, I do that myself because I prefer a natural look and my nails grow nicely, so why not.
I'm pretty sure most of us know guys aren't going to be like "Hot damn girl, I love your nails, marry me!" . We do it for ourselves. It's fun. It's nice to see your nails be a pretty color. If you like being pampered it's nice to go in and get them done and to enjoy the treatment that comes with it (sometimes a mini hand massage). Well groomed nails also just look neat and make me feel put together.
I just feel better when my nails are done and just like accessories they can show off a little about your personality.

Are we actually going to act like more than 2% of people who get their nails done would enjoy that... unique look. I actually have "long" nails myself, to most people, nothing like that woman of course but my nails just grow to be long so I just keep them that way, but I don't like getting them done, they're too rough
i do it just for my own pleasure
bc it feels good for meh
noo not plastic
my natural ones but colored with acrylic just like this. natural color but only at summer

I like manicures, but not getting my nails done (fake nails). It's such a waste on money. So many other things I could be spending my money on.
Honestly I rarely ever get my nails done only on special occasions you can either find me with my real nails and a paint job I did myself or natural.
I like girls hands if they are cute but the moment they are painted i am turned off.
honestly, even i dont fucking understand. why do they even grow long nail, they look like a freaking witch. its not even attractive, but to answer your question.
its maybe because... they want to show off?
or just make the nails look pretty along with the hand?
who knows?
I Go get my nails done only sometimes. My nails have chipped now sadly so i have to again but most girls do it because its fun i love the way it looks. So many styles and colors. Just like makeup.
That picture is clearly an exaggeration. I would say that 99,9% of women in the world would never do something like that.
I guess some women are just used to it, it's an habit. And others do it, because they think their nails look better that way.
I like getting my nails done because it's pretty. I don't get claws tho like above, lol.
I think wild nails are more like tattoos - bodily displays of self expression.
That actually one thing that i don't not care about. Lol
"Yes! Finally get to scratch people."
It's mostly because it looks pretty, although the girl above has really long nails, and that's just ugly.
Something about nice nails and hoop earring makes me feel fierce.
I don't do it like that but it is nice to get your nails done 💅. It makes you feel pretty and it's nice to treat yourself I think.
I don't find gross but I don't get the lure either. I don't know.
They re sheep, insecure and trend/fashion victims. :)
It looks nice when done properly. That pic with all the polishes is my goal 😍
I don't know but I find it gross too...
personally i don't like it
It demonstrates attention to detail.
its gross, it chips and it smells bad
BECUASE THEY LIKE TO AND IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL
It's a competitive superficial world
I get my nails done
Not all... I don't.
