I sometimes suspect -- and it may not be true for all, but enough to draw out ones to you -- that conforming reasonably well to stereotypical images whether they're a sturdy lumberjack or skinny clean-shaven surfer with a tan works quite well here if it makes you stand out a bit. It could get more complex and nuanced than the most blatant stereotypical forms, and sometimes extends to behavior and not just overall appearance, but it seems to help quite a bit to sort of fit some kind of preconceived/popular image reasonably well as opposed to being a sort of mish-mosh.
Of course, I'm sure the girls who like lumberjack image can tell you more about it, and I suspect it's going to be alone the lines of how it's a masculine and rugged and strong image. But I think it's not so much like all women like that image, but some do, and they're going to notice if you fit reasonably well. It gives you a demographic with a strong attraction to this image, whereas being all over the place style-wise can lead to almost no demographic or a demographic that isn't all that strongly attracted.
I've heard that some Asians and indigenous people find facial hair disgusting. They basically see it like pubic hair growing on your face.
