Why is she so insecure?

I live with a friend who’s really insecure and it shows. She’ll always make comments about her looks negatively even if it’s a joke and I think she constantly needs validation. I know I’m pretty and get compliments but I don’t think I need validation. She’ll make it a point to make sure I’ll hear when she gets hit on. Almost like she’s competing with me. One time me, her, and her moms friend went out to eat and while we were in the car she was saying how when she went to McDonald’s a group of guys were yelling at her. She was like “yeah I know I’m hot I told them I’d give them my number later”, Once it was obvious because I was in my room with the tv off and she sat in the kitchen and got on the phone with her parents and said how she went on a walk and these men waved at her. I know for sure she wanted me to hear about it but it’s kind of annoying. I feel like she is trying to brag but she always does this and sometimes I feel like she is lying for attention or validation. I think she’s kind a plain and not all that pretty and she never dresses up so I don’t believe in these stories. I don’t want to sound mean, she is a nice person but why does she do this?
