Broke off a friendship with a girl that I liked, she is VERY upset about it and I feel I'm like her ex now. Do girls take this more seriously?

Back in April I met a girl that I almost instantly knew I wanted to date, I flirted and we hung out a few times. After a month or so I invited her to a formal date (I was going out of the city for a month) she told me she would think about it. After the month (we texted that whole time) we had a picnic and asked her again, she was being "cautious" because she had dated friends in the past and they don't talk anymore. Anyway after a few minutes of she interviewing me and she trying to make sure we could still go out 1 on 1 all the time she said that for now she did not want to date.

After that I stopped texting her and inviting her out (I still kept a friendly manner towards her) and then she started inviting me out all the time and to text me etc. etc. I Again reiterated that I would like boundaries and then she cried and me being such a weak dude accepted again to be her friend for a while. Short story, this was draining me and she made weird comments like asking with whom I was or that sex would change her mind but at the same time kept rejecting me. In the end I told her that we needed to end the friendship and she got pretty sad about it. We decided that we would be cordial when we saw each other in person but ever since she just either avoids me and after a month she unfollowed me on Instagram. Is this a common thing among women? is she angry, frustrated, embarrassed by what happened? did I do the right thing? is it irrational to think she will return?
