Why are darker skinned women embarrassed about their skin?

I have noticed most of the dark skinned women (especially from parts like Asian countries) are kind of embarrassed about their skin colour and most even try to hide it or do something about it to lighten it as much as possible.

Why is it so?

Personally I find dark skinned women to be more attractive, exotic and appealing.

Mostly it deals with the social stigma all societies put on it in the past. China in the Han Dynasty (206BC -220AD) pale skin was for the royal court. As farmers and less educated laborers would be tanned from outside work.

Not much European colonial influence going on in the era of Chinese history. It isn't always Europe pushing the beauty standards.

Lighter skinned women get better jobs, win beauty contests and all the celebrities in Asian countries have lighter skin. It's the beauty standard there. It's unfortunate

My fiance is Asian. We went on a vacation this summer and she got very tanned. Her Asian friends commented on how dark she was and it wasn't a compliment. She thinks it makes her look dirty like a farmer or coal miner

It's mostly due to colorism and Eurocentric beauty standards and it's very prevalent in Asian countries especially. I've seen it in Black and Latino communities as well and darker skinned women are shamed for it.
