What does it mean when a girl asks if you have a girlfriend?

So, I visited this girl I knew since high School. I also think she had a slight crush on me back then but I digress. Anyway, I go to where she works at around 7pm.

She had her son there as well.

She came from the bar where she was working at ti give me a hug,

We chit chat a bit, then she says "Do you have a girlfriend?" I say no then she tells me she was in a relationship last year with a guy for three years, got engaged, moved in with him for 2 months, then broke up.

So why do girls ask if a guy has a girlfriend?

Well if go on 4-5 dates and not acted like most guys...girls will ask you this..if they have high interest level..and want to become exclusive with you. The hug part caught my eye...unless this girl is touchy feely with everyone. Seems a little strange to hug you at first...but I don't know WHO she is. Three possible reasons she asked you the girlfriend question. One...she is interested in you...and had to know. Two...she just wanted to make conversation. Three...she wanted to have a reason to tell you about her recent relationship...and give you the insight that she is single. Now don't assume she likes you more than a good friend just yet. You will have to access this yourself, because you know who she is..and maybe how she acts toward other guys better.

I would ask if I was interested in something more than a friendship and she let you know she is available too. Maybe she liked you and wanted to make sure you are available before trying flirting or something else.
