Manliness in the 21st Century

There is so much talk about manliness and the definition always seems to be changing, with different perceptions of what is and is not manly. I will not say what is manly and I will not use the word 'alpha male' (lest GAG has a hissy fit) but I will talk about how the modern man can adapt to 21st century norms with the best, most elegant style. Maybe you will agree, maybe not.

The grooming ritual

There's something very relaxing and zen about an elaborate morning routine, but it's something women seem to put a lot more time into than men. Going about your morning in a slow, methodical manner helps prepare you psychologically for the rest of the day and pace your energies in a conservative manner. It's exactly what the modern success driven needs to prepare himself for what the workday might throw his way.

And it's not just business: men are attracted to guys with healthy skin (face masks), smooth face (shaving), good smell (aftershave) and good trim body hair (man scaping). These are just some of the things that the modern man should be thinking about incorporating into his lifestyle.

Bodyhair

We can probably agree that the neanderthal look is not very desirable anymore but the 21st century man can still keep his manly hair in tack to a degree. He just needs to make sure his body is trim - face, chest, abs and pubic hair in particular. The only place body hair is totally undesirable is the back but it is certainly not impossible to remedy this.

Hair-Style and Facial Hair

I prefer short, messy, block naped and low blend / fade styles, like the ones above - they are smart but with a sense of style. Having said that, some guys can make long hair and the hipster man-buns etc. look good.

It's just that most guys don't carry the look right and many guys have greasy hair when they try this because they do not realise they need to wash more frequently (actually men should shower at least once a day anyway and use good smelling shower gel).

As for facial hair, guys should really and truly be clean-shaven, but five o'clock can work if you can grow it well:

A beard, really and truly, is a 'no' but some guys can make the hipster beard look ok:

The Man Bag

Women have their handbags because they can't carry hefty purses around in their skirts and skinny jeans. Men need something too if they want to carry their possessions without suffering bulging pockets in their jeans because of chunky i-phones, 12 sets of keys and a massive wallet. If you are sporty and like to workout (you should workout, in fact), then you might prefer the first manbag: this lets you carry your gym kit around with you along with a towel and post-workout deoderant. More generally you can carry other accessories in this manbag, including the valuables already mentioned, a small mirror if you want to check if your hair needs a comb over and some eau de toilette in case you use a public restroom (there might be a bad smell, or you might want to spray the toilet as courtesy to the next person who uses it).

Make-Up

Women already know how to optimise their appeal and attract more good looking men by enhancing their natural beauty with make up. Men should be able to use advances in the cosmetic industry to their advance also. Naturally, we cannot use make up nearly as elaborate or thick as women because this would not suit us, but this does not prevent us from mastering the craft of using a very subtle blend of make up. Good examples would be: Jonny Dep, Cristiano Ronaldo and many other attractive men with celebrity status.

Fashion

Last but not the least important. For the appropriate occasion you should dress smart and if not that, then smart-casual. As a rule of thumb, everything should be a tight fit.

Manliness in the 21st Century

The 21st century man should wear tight jeans - but not skinnies.

If wearing a shirt, the crease in the seams should not extend past your shoulder and the shirt should be tucked in, just not so tight you don't have room to breathe.

Of course, there's nothing sexier than the tuxedo royale. Some men go as far as hiring a professional tailor to get the perfect fit.

And don't slack off just because you're going to the corner shop - you might meet the woman of your dreams finding groceries in the aisle. Remember, tight is always better, even for larger men, baggy clothes just shows a lack of self-confidence (trying to hide what you look like) and it makes you look plain, dull and even a little larger than you actually are. Skinny guys that want to be more jacked should still wear tighter fitting clothes also, but avoid vests and tank-tops.
