Out of nervousness, will a shy guy reject a girl he likes when she asks for his number?

Thanks guys, but here's a bit of background. Hope you can help me decipher it.

I've been trying to get this attractive guy at work to talk to me for the past 3 months, with little luck, however. He seems like the shy type. He's very awkward to talk to as he doesn't give much back and can tell he feels uncomfortable. His face would go red whenever I talked to him. He would always smile and say hello to me. I told him yesterday that today would be my final day with the company.

I asked him if I could have a goodbye hug yesterday and he replied "Of course, you can". I asked him if he would be interested in becoming friends, he replied that we could. Today when I saw him, I asked him how we should continue this friendship. He said with a smile, "I don't know, I'm out of ideas. I'd like to see you around, though". I thought he was shy so I said, "Shall I ask for your number then?" He quickly shot out with, "No, I have a girlfriend". He said something else but I'd stopped

It's possible, but not that likely LOL. You could be right about the he's so nervous and loses all train of thought and doesn't know what to do since it might be the first time it happened to him so he's all like WTF? IS THSI FOR REAL and etc
