Why mention another girl to see your reaction?

So I have a guy friend that mentioned a random girl just to see how I'd react.. he admitted that he wanted to see my reaction. 2 of my guy friends said he surely likes me based on other signals but why would a guy do that? I don't wanna over think & say he likes me. Also he sent me a meme that says date a 7 and he said: "yes. Or a solid 3 aka me" Was that simply caring or suggestive to date him? And before I said the closest we'd ever be is bffs but he said "you never know" Id really appreciate every response to this question

He likes you but he thinks he is stuck in the FZ and wants out. He mentions the other girls to see if you act jealous because this becomes a sign to him you do like him. He starts to use those dating related comments to test your feelings and try to ask you out, but he says it jokingly in case it backfires and show you displeasure, this way he can simply retract what he said as a joke only.
