Why does my crush acts so loud with his friends when im around, but when we talk, he's very quiet?

Me and my crush aren't at the same group of class but when we meet at hallways he's always very loud with his friends but when we talk alone he's very quiet, his tone of voice changes, and he smiles... I've tried to look for some info for why does he smiles at me... help?

when in front of a person, that person have your attention, no need to be loud.
when in a group/crowd, that a different story, and you often gets louder without even noticing it.

When you talk about "smile", I'm assuming he's as young as you, so it could be for whatever reason.

I'm the same. He's less confident because he alone with you. When you're in a group you can go with the flow but making conversation is harder when it's one on one and more nerveracking.
