Knowing the line between joking and disrespect?

Okay I am pretty much a laid back person and never really took anything seriously. A lot of times even though people may make fun of me (disrespectful or just joking), I just brush it off. A lot of times I don't know the line with them being disrespectful or joking so most of the time I just brush it off, because I don't let it bother me. Sometimes I have people say that I should stand up for myself. The thing is to me it was just a joke and it is nothing. Also I have a feeling that girls might not like me because of this.



Recently I have been thinking what is the difference between just joking and disrespect. The reason for this is I don't know if people think of me as weak and don't respect, because I don't let much bother me. So trying to figure out how to get people to respect me and to know if I am being respected?

The thing about "respect" is that you can only feel "disrespected" if you are offended by something or are sensing some kind of malicious intent in the other person. If you truly do assume people are joking with you, why in the world would you want to be tuned into psycho-analyzing everything they do? It's stressful and makes you take a negative view on others and the world in general. You happen to be one of those people who doesn't take things too seriously which has a lot of positives. I am sure you have your breaking points, they are just so high that you probably haven't run into too many of those situations yet. There is something that says that how people act toward you is more a reflection of them than of you and so people should not walk around taking things so personally. You seem to have that down inherently and that is kind of a blessing in disguise. I am the opposite. I take everything extremely personally and as much as I try not to, that is kind of just my nature, it's my form of a defense mechanism. You have a defense mechanism as well, only rather than getting upset as I do, you let it roll off your shoulders. Everyone is different. It's only a problem with being a pushover when it bothers you. But if people are "walking all over you" and/or "disrespecting" you (at least in other's eyes) and you don't notice it, then it clearly doesn't bother you. Why should you start trying to make it bother you if you know it doesn't? Just because others say it should bother you? That doesn't make much sense now does it? You have a higher tolerance than most. On the other hand, it could also mean you are just immature and kind of naiive, but I don't know you so I don't want to put that label on you. I'll assume you're just a person with a higher tolerance. Lol. Hope this helps.

If something bothers you then it does, jus let people know that line. Me personally, and everyone's different, I don't value relationships as much as I value respect. I don't care who they are. I'm driven and focussed and going to high places, and don't need a lotta people in my life if people are going to take the piss I'm out, I am very valuable in my own eyes. however I'm very polite and very respectful towards everyone and do my best to love my neighbour. Just be driven and focussed and purpose fulfilled and you can't go wrong. God bless you
