Why would a man ignore the woman he likes?

Today for example, I was talking to my friend. He is a college teacher and there is this woman that he has liked for about a year, I know she likes him too since one time I heard her talking on the phone with her friend about how much she likes my friend. Anyway, when I asked him why he ignores her when she smiles to him or when she makes the effort of getting close to him, he gave me no answer. I asked him if she had done or say something bad or if he had heard something about her, he said no but he could not explain his reasons to ignore her 😧 He has made it clear many times how much he likes her and really admires this woman but instead he decides to ignore her. That led me to this question, why would a guy ignore a girl he likes?

If I like a girl, I would not ignore her. If I put myself in his shoes, I would say that he is interested in you. I would not feel comfortable coming out and saying that... trust me... put yourself in that position haha. If you really don't think that is the case, maybe use some discretion in wondering if you should confront him about the possibility that he likes you. If he likes you, then he might feel more inclined/comfortable in saying something if you suspect it. However, if he doesn't like you, then no big deal, right? Only you can make that determination.

😒 I'm not interested in my friend, I stay close to him because he had a relationship with my deceased sister, Im only hoping to see him happy again since he went through so much with my sisters death. I have my own deal going on now but not with him. Anyway, thanks your opinion does help understand yet I don't think it fits this scenario.
