What does it mean when a guy says, "let's keep it friendly for awhile. I think I need some time"?

Guy I met through some mutual friends just recently broke up with his 2 yr girlfriend. We had a lot of fun over the weekend, but he texts saying (above). Does he mean he had fun and let's be friends? Or he needs time and slowly I don't know evolve into sth else? Brutal honesty guys, thanks.

He's not emotionally ready for that commitment , he's willing to ease into it with you but he needs you to work with him, create a bond of trust and common ground then allow him to ease into it gradually. Don't take it as a reflection of yourself but rather of him, he's wise enough to know when he's not ready for a relationship, key word being ready.
