Why does he treat me better than his girlfriend?

I'm starting to feel a little guilty. My guy friend and I were traveling for work and he never called his girlfriend except to ask quick favors like, "go check this for me." They only texted, and he ignored her half the time. I called my boyfriend sometimes and texted him that I love him etc etc. Now, we're home and guy friend just was on the phone with me for hours! I can't tell if he just doesn't care about her anymore, if he likes me, or if he just treats his friends way better than her?
