No, I don't think any girl wants a stage 5 clinger - much like guys don't too.
Clingyness translates to neediness which is a definite turn-off.
Luckily the guy I'm dating we can go for a few days without any contact, then he'll give me a call or talk to me through facebook so we can set up our next date.
I can understand having more frequent communication if you're in an exclusive relationship, but to have just started dating someone and having that much is a bit much.
Your friends only think it's cute because it's not happening to them. If it were, they'd know it's anything but cute.
Try ignoring some of his calls, texts, and not even acknowledging his verbalizing missing you. Then he should get the hint.
Good luck.

I hate a clingy guy even when I'm not dating the person that's even worse! And I don't even have to be nice to them or talk to them they always text me or call me or say hi to me about 20,000 times a day (slight overexaggeration) you get my point. YOu need to set him straight now there is no subtle way to do this... trust me. Tell him that he needs to chill or tell him that your not gonna text him back all the time and that he needs to deal with it. If you don't tell him now the problem will get worse...
No, you're not the only one. Clinginess is typically not a good quality in a person. My first boyfriend got way too clingy at one point in our relationship, and it was really stifling. Staying in contact is good and all, but everyone needs their space.
I'm surprised you're still into him right now. Most women I know will ditch a guy the second they get clingy. And it makes sense. If he's so obsessed with you right now, his life must be pretty bland. I personally never send a 2nd text message if she doesn't respond for at least a few days ESPECIALLY with women that I just started dating.
Still, with that said, I've still been burned by girls when I'm not clingy at all. So it's just a hard game. Guys: Your chances of seeing a girl more often are much better when you're not clingy. However, it still doesn't guarantee you'll get the girl.
Everyone is different, depends on what you like and don't like. If it bothers you let him know, sounds like he really likes you at lot.
