I was a very short kid. Abnormally short. My doctors thought there was something wrong with me. My brother is two years younger than me, and people started confusing us for twins when I was four and he was two. After another two years, people started assuming he was older. I think the time that there was the greatest dichotomy between my age and height was when I was eleven and looked about six. My brother was nine, and looked it, and our other brother was four, but looked about three. (He was very short too, albeit not as much as me.)

He was taller than me until I was fourteen and he was twelve. For some reason I started to catch up with normal height around then. I say it’s puberty, but statistically, kids who are as short as I was tend to stay short. They grow during puberty. But not quite enough to catch them up with their peers. I still look rather young, but it’s not because of my height. My college friends are very confused now when I say that puberty hit me like a truck. But it really did. It changed my height a lot, and very quickly.

Anyway, I was very happy when I was taller than my brother, because it meant that there wasn’t anything wrong with me. I didn’t like being confused for an elementary school kid when I was in high school, and being talked to by my own peers like I was a child, so it was a pretty big deal for me. I was still technically short at this point, but not so much that people thought I was a little kid. I didn’t stop getting taller until I was seventeen.

My brother got taller than me again when I was fifteen and he was thirteen. Because puberty. So I was only taller than him for a year. He teased me for it, but he never had when I was younger. He probably picked up on the fact that it was a sensitive subject for me. It’s something that I never really thought about at the time, because the circumstances really were so much different. It was okay to make fun of then because he wasn’t making fun of something that was supposedly going to effect me for my whole life. I really appreciate my brother, and that’s one reason that I believe he cares, and he pays attention to more than he lets on.

Men tend to get taller later than women because women tend to hit puberty first. It's pretty common.

The average age guys hit puberty is 12-13. But for girls it's 10-12. There are scientific articles about it, you can check them out. But of course there are exceptions, like with everything else in life.
