There are a few things that may be the reason for his behaviour :-
1. He does not like you, but you are assuming so wrongly, thus he is repelled by the lovey - dovey vibe you may be giving off when he isn't interested in you that way.
2. He has a girl already who'll be a little less happy if he acknowledges you. Maybe he hasn't told you because he doesn't want you to know.
Enough of reasons where you're wrong. Now let's look at where he might be wrong.
3. He's actually into you, just as you thought, but he's afraid of admitting it in public therefore, he's trying to distance himself from you online but is a normal guy offline.
4. He's probably heard from a self proclaimed playboy instructor that he has to ignore you in order to make you desire him more. I think it's fairly possible because nowadays we learn from the internet more, instead of thinking about things in our own heads for a considerable time.
5. He's just a nice guy but maybe you said or did something that offended him the last time you both texted, met up.
This exhausts my brains resources. I hope it does cover the actual reason. On a side note, why don't you say that to his face straight up? Anyways do tell us what happens if you get the time to revisit this question of yours.

Okay so this could mean that the guy could be taking it a bit slow with you. He has the opportunity to interact with you in a way that doesn't involve multiple ways of telling him happy birthday. He knows that you know that it his birthday and you guys probably spoke about it in person already prior to any post that he made on the Facebook.
The idea is that he has the opportunity to say thank you in person for something you made him. Since you guys both like each other, his goal is to probably get closer to you in person. Also, try and realize that birthdays on Facebook could be overwhelming. I am sure he didn't get to every single person.
Stay in contact with him more in person. He wants you exclusively for his birthday perhaps. Explore that!

I can only guess cause I don't know the guy, but I think for some reason he fears someone else (another female) is gonna find out that he likes you.
Again, not sure, but I can't think of any other reason to explain his behavior.

I'm sorry to hear that... I'd move on from him, if a girl greets me a happy birthday I respond back. But to be clear I'm also not on my social media that often either. It sounds like he does not have the same feelings as you and is trying not to give off the wrong signals
Is he in a relationship? He might have a girlfriend who would get annoyed at him if he said anything to you about it. It could also be that he's a little socially awkward didn't know how to respond in front of everyone on Facebook. I would say the first one is the most likely, especially if he does have a girlfriend.
My guess is he's not used to getting compliments from women. Maybe his whole life he's been rejected, now he's getting your praise and this scares him. He doesn't know how to react.

it's a different reason entirely from the gender reversed version of this situation. This is a good way for a guy to avoid his feelings if he knows that they are powerful. A lot of guys will choose to ignore those they have strong feelings for because they are afraid. They don't want to be vulnerable.
He's trying to be polite in person, but he doesn't want to give you the idea that he wants closer social contact.
What a loaded, borderline fantastical question. Guys don't get female attention on social media. Maybe a couple, and they'll be excited that one woman gave enough of a shit about him.
And there are a ton of fake accounts anyway, so there's that can of worms, full of letdowns and time wasted
I'm surprised to hear this. Any woman who treats me nicely on social media gets the same in return, even if she's someone I'll never meet.

You going have to take the first step if you are interested and he has shown interest. Even though I use social media, I still see some interactions online as not a true reflection of a person feelings (alot gets lost in translation).
He may have not had anything smart to say and just thought he'd reply later. He probably just forgot about him. I still don't know why everyone here still uses Facebook though
Women generally abuse social media - it's a really bad platform for anything true (and that female insistence on being present on it is annoying at best).

2) We learned from dozens of interactions with women.
Your inability or lack of will to handle the truth doesn't make it any less true.
I never ignore any person who is nice to me. Always try my best to be nice with them, particularly women. I could ask you the question: why are you attracted to jerks?
Never knew that, it's mostly the opposite to me really.
