Why is he jealous if he’s into someone else?

I first started talking to this guy until he started being more into other girls. He treated me well at first but now he barely makes any effort to impress me. But he is head over heels with the other girls. He ignores me most of the time but when there is any guy near me, he has this look like he wants to kill the guy. Today, his friend was standing next to me and he walked by us like 40 times. His friend begins talking to me and he runs over and separates us. He gives me no attention like none so why is he getting mad when another guy does?
