He's probably trying to play it cool because he's nervous about letting you know how attracted he is to you.

I've wondered if that was a possibility. he always initiates contact, I've never reached out to him before, he messages me first always, and we snap almost 24/7. he is constantly teasing me even admitting, "I'm sorry if I seem mean, but you're just so much fun to pick on." when we're in person, I swear the chemistry is palpable and we flirt nonstop, I've even had a few people approach me and ask me if there is something going on between me and him. he always goes out of his way to tease me or comment on what I'm doing, and he always huge smiles around me, holds eye contact, I'll catch him staring so many times, or see him staring from my peripheral, always in a good mood and is ALWAYS trying to impress me.

He might be intimidated by the fact that you're older and perhaps more experienced in relationships than he is, he might think that you see him as a kid. You also might just be a physical type that he is really attracted to so that makes him guarded/

all those things make sense and could be a possibility, I also realize he really may just only see me as one of the guys. I guess time will tell.
