I think guys are more likely to change their minds on that one than girls are... but I would still say it's unlikely.
Being friends can work out if you actually want it to, but that is usually pretty difficult if you have strong feelings for someone. There is a good chance that he is interested in someone else, or that he will be in the future which makes it even harder.
But, it really depends on the person and the situation. Flattery is pretty powerful. A lot of guys are just afraid of commitment. It could be worth it to give him some time and just try to make the most of being friends even if you don't enjoy it, but you have to be careful and meter your expectations to avoid getting hurt.
Sometimes it's better to just focus on finding someone else you like, even if it's difficult and not really what you want to do. Sometimes it's better to just focus on yourself.
But if one thing is certain, it's that you will be happier with someone who genuinely wants to be with you than someone who doesn't. He might change his mind, but it's not easy to change someone else's, and trying usually ends in heartache.
In my experience, it's best to ask yourself if you want to stay friends even if there is no romance, or if you'd rather just keep your distance and avoid the heartache. If you want to stay friends, do it, and it's always possible that he will change his mind on his own.
But if you are too upset over it to accept being friends, it's probably best to just avoid him or you risk ending up even more hurt. =/
Although guys are often liars, when they make that kind of statement you can count on it being truth. You can stick around, but you're a young woman, so don't waste your time hoping he'll change his mind. Trust me on this.

In theory yes but dont count on it. He was probly just being a flirt and realized he wasn't actually taking you serious and respects you enough not to use you
It's worth giving him second chance but if it's Started getting awkward then exit
He might change is his mind some day, but you should focus on other guys from now on.
