Should I send a message to the guy I used talk to for 2 years or no?

I used to talk to a guy I went school with. He was in prison so 10years. I talked to him for the last 2 years while he was in there. He said to be patient with him cause he has a lot on his plate. But it's been a year. I heard he got back with his son's mom and that's great. I'm happy for him. But then heard they're not together anymore. And the next day I saw his profile pop on Facebook in the "People I may know". So I'm just wondering whether or not I should send him a message like " hey freebird! You're alive! How the heck are ya?" Or should I just go on about life like we were never friends?
