Why does my guy friend seem to always pull away from me after we've spent time together in person?

We've only hung out a handful of times (fairly new friendship) but every single time we do, for the next few days or so he gets weird and pulls back, messages less, and just acts kind of cold towards me.
We always have an amazing time, like from the moment we see each other we don't stop smiling, laughing, goofing off, picking on each other, etc. there's definite chemistry there, but like neither one of us makes a move.
He'll say he had a great time, can't believe how fast the time flew by and how much time we spent together just talking and being around each other.
So if he's enjoying it so much like he says, why does he duck out for a while after the initial hang?
