Why is my teacher acting hot and cold with me all of a sudden?

A little backstory, I have had this teacher for almost 4 years now and we have always had a closer bond than his other students. We love to joke around a lot, talk about anything under the sun and I generally really like his classes because they're not boring like a lot of my other classes. I have always been very energetic for as long as I can remember, I am the type of person that will talk to anyone about anything. I never had trouble with my energy until this semester and despite me being talkative, I do all my assignment and get pretty good grades. Many teachers and students said they appreciated my energy including this teacher but lately he's been telling me to be quite a little more than usual. Normally, as a joke but now, I'm not so sure. I never had this problem with him before until now, It bothers me, I consider myself close with this teacher and socialization is a very important part of my day but regardless when I do stay quiet, after some time, he'll almost beg me to start talking to him again. I usually am always talking unless I am having a bad day or someone has upset me. When he knows he's the one who's upset me, he'll suck up to me. Even showers me with stuff I didn't ask for so I would talk to him again, (drinks, gift cards etc.), he'll make jokes excessively until I cave in and joke back. If those two options don't work, he will start to physically annoy me. Hitting my head with paper or pen, even shove things in my face etc. anything that will earn him a reaction and get me talking again, even if its just to tell him to F off. When I mentioned his bizarre behaviour to students, they said they never received special treatment when this teacher has upset them. This is almost a constant pattern since the beginning of this semester, he tells me to stop talking, I do, then he wants me to talk again. What's with this hot and cold behaviour? Does he just not like me as a student anymore? Please help, your opinions are much appreciated.

He probably thinks things are getting a little too intimate and wants to back off as it is big trouble for a teacher to get involved with a student is all.

that doesn't quite make sense to me. If that's the case, why does he still want me to speak with him when I do back off. Like I said in my post, when I back off, he tries to do anything to get a reaction out of me and besides, It's not like I act intimate towards him or flirt with him. I have never left that soft of impression to him.
