Why Would New Guy Friend Insist on Meeting Family and Friends?

Over the past two months, I have developed a friendship with a guy with whom I used to work. We have a lot in common and enjoy one another's company, but he knows I am only interested in a friendship. We have a shared lifelong dream of visiting a particular area of the US and have tentatively planned a road trip there in a few weeks. While I am perfectly content to visit my family and friends at another time, my guy friend insists we make a visit to my hometown on the way so he can meet them. He talks about it often. My family thinks this is a bit odd. I asked why he is insisting on meeting them and he always says, "I just like meeting people." Is it that simple? Or is he interested in more than a friendship?
