Guys, why is peace and quiet important in a relationship?

I have never been in a relationship or talked to a guy so bear with me. I’ve heard men say they want peace and quiet. I’ve seen guys say they’re okay with the silent treatment because it’s quiet. Do women talk your ear off that much?

I’d like to be in a relationship one day, but now I’m nervous that having simple conversation will annoy a guy. I wouldn’t want to nag and complain to him, so I don’t know if that’s what it means. I want to be a man’s peace and our home to be quiet/peaceful, but I don’t know if it’s supposed to be that way 24/7.

The desire for quiet can be a reaction to non-stop unfocused talking, conflict or nagging. The main problem is due to schools not bothering to teach effective communication skills from early age. If you want to learn effective communication skills, find a therapist who specializes in communication, but make sure you learn with someone you can practice with, or you'll continue the dysfunctional patterns you see all around you. There is a big difference between talking and communicating. We usually talk when we are relaying facts and figures, whereas communication is about gaining a deeper understanding of the other person's perspective. Communication helps people to feel safe and draws them closer. No one wants to be on the receiving end of nagging, complaining and criticism, so learn the tools before you create something that could have been avoided from the start.

I'm married and I will say that my wife does feel the need to verbalize EVERY thought that pops into her head. She is wonderful, but she can be overwhelming and I need a break from her "communication" on a regular basis to maintain my sanity. There is something called a "nothing box" that I think most men have in their brains (I know I do) that I need to spend time in daily or I'll go bonkers. They don’t really mean silence. They mean tranquility. If you like to talk find a man that likes to talk about something your both interested in.


This isn’t a case of don’t speak unless spoken to lol. Just don’t yell and nag. Don’t be angry. Don’t show negative emotions because they spread.

I think it depends on the person, for some people it might not be important at all. Do you mean why is personal space so important? If so, that's a different answer entirely.
