What could be the reason for him to just randomly give me a hug?

This guy who is my friend gave me a hug out of nowhere when I was about to leave work. The next day when I got to talk to him. He randomly apologized for it and said he should have waited. I told him he doesn’t seem like the type to hug and he said he isn’t. Only when people ask and he said it also depends on the person. But I never asked him for a hug before. So could there be a reason behind it I don't know. (The hug was awkward because we never hugged before so we didn’t know which type of hug to give in the moment)
