Like let’s say 20-25 an absolute plonker. Failing degrees etc then 25-30 became so intelligent and did some very impressive things and became successful etc

Geniuses do things on their own time table. They aren't typically concerned with normal life goals. They have their own interests. Generally kids that perform very well in school are not geniuses. Geniuses tend to focus on things that interest them, and ignore things that are uninteresting.
