Why do guys ghost you and then come back briefly before ghosting again?

Anonymous
A few months ago I met this guy and we talked consistently for about a week (texting AND calling). He lives a few hours away so we did not meet up after our random first encounter. Side note, but upon first talking he made sure that I knew he is 9 years older than me. We addressed it, and neither of us had a problem.

After our last call (which went really well, we even were making plans together) he texted me that night and I replied the next day (he never answered). I texted him again a week later gently touching base and letting him know if he wasn’t feeling it that was totally fine. He texted back ADAMANTLY stating he wanted to keep talking to me. I said okay sounds good, and have not received another text/call from him since. Now I am fine with this, I don’t love getting ghosted, but he had no obligation to me so I moved on obviously.

Fast forward a couple months to last week, I get a notification he added me on Snapchat. I added him back after a couple days and he sent me a photo very shortly after. Over the course of about 24 hours, I replied, then he snapped me another photo of himself and I replied again. He has since left me on opened (surprise, surprise!!). That was a couple days ago now. He didn’t actually say anything in any of the snaps he sent me. Obviously I am not expecting anything to go anywhere with this guy, but I would like some opinions on why he would add me on Snapchat, send a couple photos and then disappear again (all while not actually ever saying anything to me lol). I just find this sort of behaviour baffling and kind of ridiculous, especially for someone his age. I know it is VERY common, but still! Any thoughts?
