What's the meaning behind men ordering for women when they eat out?

What's the meaning behind a man ordering for a woman when they eat out? I mean after she had told him what she wanted to get (but there's still chance she could change her mind).

What do you think of such gesture?

For men/guys, have you done this? What was the reaction or response of the woman you went out to eat with? Was it a date, or have you mostly done this regardless of whom you're eating out with?

For women/girls, have you encountered a guy do this for you? How did / do you feel about that?

I ate out with a friend. It wasn't a date. That wasn't the primary plan of the day. We just stopped by a place to eat since we finished the main plan, had not eaten lunch and it was 4:00 in the afternoon.

I've eaten out with 3 guys in my life, including this friend. The previous 2 let me say my orders, maybe after they had said theirs, sometimes before. I haven't noticed any pattern.

Anyway, when the waitress asked what we wanted to order, I started saying one word but noticed that my friend was getting my order, so I felt like I cut him off 🙊 I didn't know he was going to get my orders, and would feel bad if I make a man feel unmanly.

I'm guessing this could be an old-school, chivalry manner. He opened car door for me as well when we carpooled to the primary place.

Regardless of my guesses, it was the first time I'd encountered this gesture. I'm interested in interpersonal relationships, behaviors and gestures of different people, so I just want more insight into this. Thank you.
