Why did my brother's friend message me?

Long story short, I met my brother's friend 2 months ago. My brother and I thought he was interested in me and I'm interested in him. I added him on FB right after we met. Few days ago, i confided in my brother and told him I like his friend.

A couple days after I told my brother, he went to his friend's place and supposedly told his friend that I like him (my brother can be unreliable tho, sometimes lies, so who knows what exactly was and wasn't said). According to my brother, his friend said he is not interested in me.

The next day, however, his friend sends me a FB message and we briefly talked throughout the day. It wasn't a normal convo tho like "hi, how are you?" He was bullsh*tting around, kinda teasing me, kinda almost sounded flirty. Then he opened my last message and stopped replying around 8pm.

If he's not interested in me, why did he message me? Why did he send me random a$$ somewhat playful flirty messages? What was the point of it all? I'm so confused.

Did you mention casually to you brother, "hey Name contacted me today" kind of thing. I would do that in person to see brother's reaction.-That may be a way to get a better sense of the guy you like intent... and if your brother may have been misleading you?

No, I was thinking about doing that today. Part of me doesn't want to do that though because I know my brother would bring it up to his friend and I don't want his friend to think I tell my brother everything, if that makes sense. But it's really bothering me that I don't know why his friend randomly sent me some messages, so I'll probably ask my bro today; he's moving away tomorrow.

Lol right? Ugh, I'm so conflicted. Maybe I'll ask my brother using a "hypothetical" scenario when he gets here. Thanks for the help.

Update: I asked my brother what it meant when a guy who supposedly knows I'm interested messages me, and he kept asking who it was that messaged me. I told him to not worry about it and he eventually figured out it was his friend. So then I told him what his friend said and he smiled and laughed about it. Later, he was on the phone with him and I tried to eavesdrop but only heard bits and pieces, not sure if they talked about the messages. But now I'm worried my brother brought it up to him. Not that a relationship ever would've happened with this guy to begin with but ugh, I wish I kept my mouth shut to my brother.

His behavior is very odd. Maybe he changed his mind, or perhaps your brother wasn't telling you the truth.

Kind of hard to when I haven't seen him in person in a month. And my brother is moving out of state so I don't know when I'll see his friend in person again, unless we set something up, but I doubt that will ever happen.
