Why did he lie to my brother that he messaged me when he didn’t?

I was friends with this guy for 2 years at work, and he also knows my brother. Recently I quit my job about a month ago cause of management issues and horrible working conditions.

Last week or so my brother told me that the guy sent me messages on facebook messenger about a job that I might be interested in.

I checked both facebook messenger and instagram and nothing. I don't know if he lied about it, or he sent it and it didn’t go through or what.

I was gonna message him and say that I didn’t get it but I decided to ignore cause I had a lot going on at that moment and couldn’t really talk.

I might message him when I’m ready, but the way my brother told me about my friend messaging me, he said he sounded certain that he did message me but I never got anything.

Any ideas before I speak to him again? I don’t wanna overthink anything but also not ready to talk to him just yet (due to something personal)
