Why is this guy suddenly talking to me?

So, there is this guy who has been in my class for the past 2 years and we hadn't really talked or anything. However, we are "academic rivals" and therefore somehow paid attention to each other.

But, since the beginning of the year, he has been acting weird, like he looked at me a LOT, like we make eye contact.

Today was the weirdest tho. He went and talked to me like all day. He asked me about irrelevant things about class and the tests like twice, on the morning and the afternoon.

And he waited for me after our last class, when all of his friends were gone to ask me a question about my future orientation, and tried to like make small talk with me. I can't tell if like this doesn't mean anything or if something is up with his attitude.

Maybe he likes you. Maybe he friendly and either way trying to get to know you.
