Me and my group were working on an assignment, and my crush sits right next to me. He wondered why I was freaking out, and I told him. He put his hand on my shoulder and told me to calm down and that it'll be alright. What do you think it meant?

In that specific case, I think he thought the hand on your shoulder was comforting and was trying to help you calm down. Continued attention like that from him will mean he's interested in you.
