Why did my friends with benefits pick a fight and block me?

I've been friends with a guy for about a year and a half now. We dated once or twice but it didn’t go anywhere but we stayed friends. Over this time we have hooked up quite a bit. But we were also really good friends and we messaged daily. Last time we hung out was when he came round for a film and food. Earlier today I messaged him asking what he got up to last night snd he started being so mean, saying I was being weird for asking and it was none of my business. I said I didn’t get why he was being so defensive and jt was just a question, next thing I know he’s blocked me on everything. I’m so confused. I always thought we were friends excluding the sex part and it’s made me feel really shit and completely worthless
