Why does he stare at me from afar but act uninterested when I approach him?

He is very friendly to me online but in person he is closed off and dry and oftentimes looks at his phone or look for excuses to leave the conversation. He seems to find me really uninteresting but for some reason stares or glances at me from across the room when he thinks I'm not looking and once leaned in really close when he was talking to me. Did I do something wrong? Why does he act so strange around me?

It sounds like you make him shy and nervous. The glancing across thw room thing is something I tend to do, and I can get really shy if I like a girl.
