Asking a Guy if he wants to gym-buddy with me?

I've been going to the gym pretty constantly since last year, and at first, I was going with my brother, because I found having someone I know there grounds me. I have a lot of social anxiety and self-consciousness. Since he's stopped going, I've really wanted someone to go with, even if we don't work out together, but just for the 'hey person I know' vibes if that makes any sense?

Anyway, there's a guy I know somewhat. We're not friends, and he's two years younger than me. I used to see him at my gym when I began, but he stopped for a while, and I heard he's thinking of renewing his membership, but he wants someone to go with, and I've been thinking about asking him.

For context, he seems to be kind of antisocial, or awkward, so I can't tell if he dislikes me whenever we've been around each other, or if he feels uncomfortable and intimidated because I'm a girl and I'm older than him. Our parents got together a few days after New Year's for dinner, and I tried to be friendly and start a conversation with him but though he answered my questions, he didn't put any effort into carrying it on, and I let it go because it felt awkward. I can seem pretty cold myself when I'm feeling shy or uncomfortable, so I don't want to leap to the idea that he hates my guts for some reason. But I was hoping to get some people's, especially guys' opinions on whether it would be weird for me to ask if he'd like to go to the gym with me sometimes. I know guys often prefer other men to go with, but seeing as we're both in the same boat, it could be a nice solution. Any kind/helpful thoughts on how to approach this?
