Was My Elementary School Friend Gay?

During elementary school there used to be a kid who was different. He had buck teeth, stuttered and behaved as if he was autistic. There was definitely something that made him special needs due to how unusual he was.

That kid also got really violent when provoked. One time in fifth grade he got into a fight and it took 2 teachers to hold him back becuz he wanted to strangle a kid who messed with him.

Naturally being in elementary school and being different he was the target to mockery.

One of the people who made fun of him was a friend of mine. Since the kid had buck teeth people used to bully him by calling him SpongeBob SquarePants.

Now my friend used to provoke that kid by singing "SpongeBob SquarePants" around him and twerking.

Now the strange thing is that he didn't used to shake his booty point towards the autistic kid. He would just shake it and sing SpongeBob to bully the kid.

One time I was sitting in class next to him and the autistic kid passed by our window. My friend poked his head out the window, started twerking and singing SpongeBob to humiliate the autistic kid.

The problem was that standing up he booty was never my face and he was shaking it. However due to his head being out the window the autistic kid couldn't even see him twerking.

Since then I stopped sitting with him. Now years later as an adult remembering those moments I wonder if my friend was gay.

Like he certainly behaved homoerotically to tease the kid.

Was my friend showing early signs of closeted homosexuality?

It's hard to say for sure based on those incidents alone, but it does raise some eyebrows. A few thoughts:

- Kids that age are still figuring themselves out, so exaggerated bullying could sometimes stem from confusion over their own feelings/identity.

- Twerking and shaking his butt in another boy's face, even in "mocking", toes the line of homoerotic behavior. Straight boys usually don't act that way.

- Then again, kids will use whatever insults they can think of in the moment. Might have just been his immature way of trying to get under the autistic kid's skin.

- Either way, that was super messed up of him to bully that poor kid, who was already different and dealing with his own stuff. Not cool behavior.

- Who knows if he really was gay - he may be straight as an arrow now as an adult. Kids experiment with their image a lot.

- If I saw a guy acting like that today though, I'd definitely wonder... If the shoe fits, you know?

Hard to say for sure from the past. Either way, hope he grew up and treats all people with respect now regardless of orientation. We were all learning back then.
