Do you like funny or serious men/women?

I have always liked serious men, but my guy friend asked me a very interesting question the other day

“If you like these serious men - who’s going to make you laugh?”

That’s a good question- There are guys who make me laugh all the time, but why do I still like serious men?

So I always have funny guy friends and they make me laugh to tears when I am stressed out by those serious men.

I wonder, why not go for funny men instead? But I feel more attracted and curious to the serious ones.

My wife isn't the funniest (she actually tends to hilariously copy my jokes and tells them to her friends but messes up the timing and punchline) but she has a huge sense of humor and finds so many things funny.

That works out really well for our case since I enjoy making people laugh if I can (although my sense of humor is a bit out there) and she enjoys laughing.

It's similar with affection. I enjoy giving hugs as an ENFP and she enjoys receiving hugs being INFP.

So when I was single, one of the main things I was looking for were women who could laugh at my silly jokes. That has a functional purpose beyond laughing.

I use humor as a diplomatic tool to ease tension and conflict. For example, if I see two people about to fight each other, first I try to calm them down being a mediator and peacekeeper type but the next thing I try to do to ease their tension is improvise a joke and try to get them both laughing. When they're laughing, they can usually hug and make up.

I rely on that a lot but it doesn't work on very serious types of people who take everything seriously and personally all the time. So I'm allergic to those types of women since my methods of deescalating conflicts and lightening the mood doesn't work on them.

For me, laughter is the gateway to love and affection as well as the most soulful exchanges that develop the deepest forms of mutual understanding. People who think very differently from me and see humor as a barrier rather than a gateway to love, affection, and deep mutual understanding are thoroughly incompatible with me (not saying they're wrong or anything, just incompatible).

Although it was actually kind of funny when we first met since I was dressed in t-shirt and shorts chugging beers while she wore this fancy dress with fancy wine and cheese. @Alwayreckles93 Very much, although I thought she might be a snob in her fancy dress with her fancy wine and cheese. I turned out to be totally wrong there.

It's difficult to tell who made the first move exactly since we just started talking being next to each other. That tended to repeat a lot. We'd hang out with our friends and end up at the edge of the party, like the balcony of a friend's house, talking so much and almost forgetting the party and the rest of our friends until they shouted, "Hey, you two are missing the party!" It just kept repeating like that for almost a year.

Then one day we were in a bar and all of our friends had to leave early that night leaving just the two of us there. So we started dancing (I initiated), then she kissed me (just a peck on the lips, like a tease), then I kissed her back, and then we started dating.

Then our first date was awkward since it's the first time I ever dated such a close friend. So she laughed at my jokes, we shared a lot as usual, but I couldn't figure out when to make any moves since she did that the whole time as a friend. So I was like, "Wait, is she just being friendly or is this my cue to make a move?" I was so confused.

So towards the end of our relatively uneventful date while in the elevator, I just said, "Fuck it!" and jammed the emergency stop button on the elevator and kissed her. Then she kissed me back and we made out in the elevator until the emergency lights went off and it resumed and we were jamming buttons all over the place trying to get the doors to close.

We quickly became an item after that. Now we've been married for 14 years.

I’m a good times guy, through and through. Being serious is the anti-life, lmao. I have such a hard time understanding and relating to serious people, to be honest. Like loosen your tie and have a beer, figuratively or literally, none of what’s going on is as important as you’re giving it credit for.

Is the seriousness of the serious guys what ultimately leads to it not working out? Sometimes we’re attracted to what isn’t necessarily best for us, haha. I can’t tell you what the point of your life should be, but I like to think one of the points of my life is to laugh as much as a can.

Maybe you should try dating a funny guy. I think we’re a pretty good time, haha. But at the same time…. attraction is attraction, so maybe that’s just not for you, for whatever reason. Maybe you could ideally find a guy who has aspects of both to his personality.

I don’t know, you just kind of have to shop around, you know? You’re young and you have the whole world at your fingertips, so just explore life, this is the time to figure out who you are and what you want for yourself in life👍 And “don’t let perfect be the enemy of good”, everyone will have flaws, and you’ll be waiting a long time if you wait for someone who fits your exact ideal specifications. Anyway, my point is, we all should try all the flavors out and decide which one is the best one for us to hopefully get stuck eating for the rest of our lives, haha

Having had too much seriousness in my life already, I have little tolerance to drama, even if it’s fictional. I don’t joke all the time, not even close; that would be forcing it anyway. I can come up with good ones occasionally, usually in response to something neutral said by someone else. Having decades worth of pop culture references stacked upstairs helps, as does the occasional mixed metaphor, and using that rare opportunity to sound like a whopping moron. I save it until I can use it to its full potential, and I prefer to use a deadpan delivery.

I prefer serious men. I mean, I love laughing and being around people who make me laugh, but I don't like men who are always trying to be funny. I like when they know when it's time to joke and when it's time to be serious.

I notice I tend to like women who are able to be serious when needed, but still have a funny or goofy bone in them. Can't say that I like one or the other because for me, a nice mix is needed since I tend to have a mix as well.
