Why do guys suddenly chase after me only when I walk away?

Lately, since a recent breakup, I've developed an internal reflex to start walking away from any fellow who is dawdling when I have a "to do" list of places to get to (e. g., if I'm simply at work and trying to get things done or it's raining and i need to move along to the covered bus station). In the past I'd linger also, patiently waiting to walk to the next task with my friend. Now, I just smile and start taking my path to the next task/place and I've noticed the guy will typically chase after me to catch up and chat.

It's odd bc in the past when I lingered they'd take their time and perhaps grin, look flattered, have zero sense of urgency. Now they'll RUN to catch up (bc I walk faster than they expect) and they'll linger wherever I am even if it's in the opposite direction of where they're supposed to be. Part of me is flattered -- obviously the fellow is being nice and attentive. But part of me is baffled bc when I give a guy the time of day they're nonchalant but when I walk away they're running to keep up... and I'm not even doing it to mess with the guy, I just am prioritizing myself and my "to do" list.

I find it super contrarian... even illogical. I had to tell one guy not to chase me again unless I was on fire... then he had my permission to put out the fire.

Anyway, before GAG AI warps my question again, I want to know:

  • GUYS: What prompts you to chase after a girl?
  • GIRLS: Has a guy ever chased you down like this before?
