Why Healthy Living Is Superior T0 Make-Up

1. Focus on Holistic Wellness vs. Focus on Outward Beauty

Without a doubt, make-up is focused on outward beauty, how you look on the outside. All the things that the beauty industry wants you to buy are aimed at making you look youthful and beautiful on the outside. You have primers, concealers, foundations, blushes, lipsticks, lip glosses, eye liners, mascara, eyebrow pencils, etc. You may obtain cheap make-up products from drugstores or high-end make-up products from cosmetics stores. Either way, you have to spend tens to hundreds of dollars on make-up, supplies, and beauty products; and their quality do not last forever in your cabinet. Why spend so much money on cosmetics when you can simply spend the same amount of money on fresh produce that can boost your health, immune function, and beauty?

In addition, the only personal care products that you would ever need are soaps and shampoos for personal hygiene, nail clippers, tweezers for cleaning nails, sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful UV light, hats for sunny days, and modest garments that cover the skin as much as possible to minimize harmful exposure during the noon hours. Facial make-up for changing skin appearance, mascara, and even pubic hair removal aren't really that necessary. If you eat your vegetables and fruits regularly, then your skin will show that you are well nourished, and your eyelashes will be naturally long. And pubic hair protects you from diseases. Clearly, cosmetics stores are trying to sell you products that you do not need and that mimic or exaggerate the effects of true health.

2. Modesty vs. Vanity

Make-up requires time to put on and time to take off. That means you have to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, trying to find any kind of imperfection and fix it with make-up. Many people say that wearing make-up "boosts their confidence", but this suggests that the confidence level in these people is extremely shallow, that their self-worth as a human being relies on people perceiving them as "beautiful".

If less time is focused on make-up and more time is focused on preparing healthy meals (which can be quite time-consuming and energy-consuming), sleeping regularly, maintaining an adequate level of physical exercise, and contributing positive changes to the world, then people can look great and be confident in themselves, without depending one's own self-worth on one's façade.

3. Longevity vs. Temporary Pleasure

Some people put on make-up, because they find the activity enjoyable. However, this enjoyment is short-lived. A woman's beauty is short and fleeting. As she ages, she becomes less attractive. The good thing about eating healthy food, like vegetables and fruits, is that it can slow down the process of aging, boosting longevity. More time should be spent in the kitchen, preparing healthy food, not in the bathroom, giving oneself the temporary pleasure of applying false beauty.

4. Honesty vs. Deception

You are definitely what you eat. If a person eats well, then he is going to look good. If the person eats poorly, then he doesn't look so good. Make-up is great at deception, tricking people to think that you are healthier than what you really are. You may hide a flaw or two once in a while, but if you persistently hide your flaws without correcting the real issue, then soon the truth will come out. Therefore, not applying make-up will display to the world and to yourself how you really look. If you do look poorly, then you should treat your body right by eating healthy and loading up your plate with fresh vegetables and fruits! Honesty works!

5. Necessity of Life vs. Luxury

Maintaining healthy eating habits is a necessity of life. Make-up is a luxury. If you cannot afford the high price of all those shiny things, then you may be better off with investing in your health. Treating your health with top priority at an early age can make you less dependent on make-up and pharmaceutical drugs. If everyone is healthy and happy, then do you think drug companies and cosmetics stores will survive? Or do you think they will market their products in a way to increase demand for something people really don't need at all?

Refutes and Rebuttals

But people of the opposite sex won't be attracted to me!

Beauty standards around the world are associated with social status than health, and just because you have social status doesn't mean you are eating well. Black teeth, bound feet, powdered wigs, pale skin, and plump bodies mean something in social status, hence setting the beauty standard of the day. They are not relevant to healthy living, and they come and go. Maintaining a healthy body can lead you a long life.

I am already naturally thin. I don't need vegetables.

Everybody blames on obesity. Obese people are portrayed in the mass media as ugly, stupid, and useless. This pattern of thought is detrimental in two ways. First of all, it's not helping obese and overweight people at all. It's just harming them by making them feel bad about themselves, not educating them how to obtain healthy food and eating habits and healthy ways to deal with stress. Second of all, it's not helping the naturally thin people who eat unhealthy. They are removed from censure, because they are perceived as "healthy", but the unhealthy food and lifestyle habits (i.e. smoking) are ravaging their bodies as they age. A calorie-low diet of junk food may seem appealing, but if it doesn't have a lot of nutrients, that person is still undernourished. Eating vegetables and fruits is healthy, because they are not only low in calories, but also rich in protective and sustaining nutrients for life.

Vegetables taste bad.

Alas, many vegetables taste bitter or bland in their raw state. Gently cooking the vegetables (stir-frying, steaming, boiling in soups, baking) can make vegetables more savory and tasty. Salads and crudités can include raw vegetables in the diet. Eating a plant-based diet of vegetables, fruit, legumes, and soy products fills you up (hence moderating your intake), and you are receiving nutrients. What's not to like?

My bad lifestyle habits have already taken a toll on my health; is it too late? Is it possible to regain what I lost (beauty, health, youth)?

It is never too late to regain your health by starting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle is different from person to person, based on cultural background, but I'm sure that we can all agree that fruits and vegetables are healthy for us, that we need to sleep to become energized, that we need an adequate level of physical activity, and that we should avoid smoking and alcoholism/drug dependency.
